Play Doom for free – ZDoom

You remember the classic PC game, Doom? Want to play it? Want to play it with improved graphic? I’ll show you how, it’ll be easy and it’s free. You’ll need two things: Zdoom, and the Doom.wad. I’ll show you how to get Zdoom.
To get ZDoom

1. Click here
2. Download the latest version of Zdoom (as of now 2.2.0)
3. After you download it, extract it anywhere where you are sure to play and not move the folder(after placing the wad)

Ok, now you’ll need to get the .wad. You can get it by purchasing a copy of any doom PC game, extracting through DOS, and finding the .wad file. Or, get it for free.

To get Doom.wad

Your main goal is to get doom.wad

1. Click here
2. Download doom on the Doom picture(Or better yet, press CTRL and F, type doom, and choose the doom game the is over 7oookb size)
3. extract the .zip file you downloaded
4. Double Click on the application inside the extracted folder.
5. Install it (Press “C” for the drive, and continue)
6. Go to My Computer
7. Double click the C: hard drive
8. You’ll find a doom folder, 0pen it.
9. Double click on the application, it will install all the files in that folder
10. Find Doom.wad or Doom1.wad, (view the folder as details, and find the type, “WAD”), and drag it inside the Zdoom folder that you extracted.
11. Open the Zdoom application and you’re finished!

Hurray, you are playing doom, like the classic one, just use the arrows, esc, and enter to navigate through the menu.

You can customize the the interface too. Don’t forget to set the size of the game in the Video setting, it’s better to set it at a size of your screen’s resolution. In the Display Setting, turn off the stretch short sky mode. Set cross hair to know where you hit, in doom you shoot with the Horizon, not vertical because it automatically targets the enemy. If you don’t like the HUD that shows your stuff on the bottom of the screen during the game, you can press the “+” button to shorten it (I like it). If you want to play doom like a regular FPS(as of Sept 18, 2008), then go to mouse settings, and turn on Mouse Look. Now you can look around with both horizon and vertical. Make sure you turn on Stretch Short Sky. Make sure you put on a crosshair. You’ll still shoot vertically automatically, if you want to shoot with your crosshair like a regular FPS, then go to player setup, go to the option at the bottom, and set it to “never” by pressing the left arrow. You can also make the game look theatrical, when selecting a display size, you’ll see some choice that says “lb”(letter-box). If it says that, you can set the game on wide-screen. If you are using a display that’s using wide screen, the don’t choose lb.

Don’t forget to customize the control! The default one isn’t good. set “,”, down, “.”, and up with a, s, d, and w. The , and . key will strafe left and right, so make sure that is set to A and D. Assign keys for running, using, and map; because that’s is how doom is played. There is no jumping, flying, or crouching in the game.

The version you downloaded includes 3 episodes. There is 4 episode in doom, but you have the old version of it, so the 4th one isn’t included. I played the fourth one, it’s a bit hard on Hurt Me Plenty mode. But if you beat the game, then you would want to play Doom II, it’s better than the 4th episode.

To get Doom II(not 2):
Just do the steps for getting Doom.wad, early. But for step 2, find doom2 through the list(It’s better to download the highest size in kb)(Do not download Doom2 2-d(act), because that’s not doom2), download it, continue the steps, the only difference is that you have to find Doom2.wad, and then drag it to your Zdoom folder and run it (if you have 2 .wads, then you’ll be given a choice to play Doom or Doom2).

And after you’re done with the game, you can edit the .wad, and create your own game doom game! Just click here, download it, and install it. When you run the application, it may need a file that ends with a .dll. To fix it, type in the required .dll filename on Google, and there will be a web page that let you download the .dll file, or if you’re don’t want to copy the file name, then click here, I’ve done it for you. Enter, download it, extract it, go to My computer, C: hard drive, program file, and drag the .dll file into the Doom Builder folder. Now you can run it, if you’re using vista, then right click the application, and select Run as administrator. At first it’s really hard to figure out what your supposed to do in Doom builder, I just experimented everything, and check maps that were done and copy it from scratch. Adding monster shouldn’t be too hard to figure, to add stuff you just have to right click anywhere in the map, or double click with the left button of your mouse. Ask me if you need help with anything, and I’ll do whatever I can do to help.

If you want to play online, then you would want to have Skull Tag, which works like Zdoom, but it has its own features(Bot deathmatch, and survival mode). Click here, download, and install it. You may need to drop a copy of a .wad in the SkullTag folder through program files, so that it can play. Drop Doom2.wad in it to play, not doom1, because there is no feature for it.

Still want more Doom? You could play Doom 3, wait for Doom 4, or  buy the doom collector’s edition to play Final Doom(master level not included). I’ve heard this one is really hard, someday I might buy the collector’s edition and play on Zdoom. I haven’t found any wad for it online, so you’re better off buying the game.
